The All-Girls Advantage: Why Girls Thrive in a Girls-Only Primary School
Choosing the right school for your daughter is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent. While academic success is undoubtedly important, most families are also looking for a school where their daughter will be known, valued, challenged and encouraged to become the very best version of herself.
One question I am often asked by prospective parents is: "What are the advantages of an all-girls education compared to a co-educational one?"
At Strathearn Prep, we firmly believe that the primary years provide a unique opportunity for girls to flourish in an environment designed specifically around their needs, interests and ways of learning. This belief is supported not only by our own experience but also by extensive research from the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) and the International Coalition of Girls' Schools (ICGS), both recognised internationally for their work in girls' education.
Girls Learn Without Limits
In a girls-only school, every aspect of school life is designed with girls at its centre.
Research from the GDST shows that girls in all-girls environments are more likely to participate actively in lessons, challenge ideas, take on leadership roles and pursue a broader range of subjects, including STEM disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They are also less likely to be influenced by traditional gender stereotypes when making decisions about their interests and ambitions.
In an all-girls classroom, there is no sense that certain subjects are "for boys" or that leadership positions naturally belong to someone else. Every role, every opportunity and every achievement belongs to a girl. As a result, girls develop the confidence to take centre stage, ask questions, share opinions and embrace challenge.
Finding Their Voice
Confidence is one of the most significant benefits associated with girls-only education.
The GDST's research found that girls educated in its schools are significantly more confident than their peers and are more likely to feel prepared for the future. They are less restricted by gender stereotypes, more willing to take on leadership responsibilities and more likely to believe that they can achieve ambitious goals.
In a girls-only setting, every pupil council representative, sports captain, house leader and prefect is a girl. Every voice matters. Every girl has the opportunity to develop leadership skills and learn that her ideas and opinions are worth hearing.
The Advantage Starts Early
The benefits of an all-girls education are not confined to the senior years. Some of the most compelling research suggests that the advantages begin during primary school.
A landmark study by the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST), involving more than 5,000 girls, found that by the age of nine, girls educated in girls-only schools were already demonstrating higher levels of confidence, resilience and willingness to take risks in their learning. They were more likely to see themselves as leaders, contribute actively in class discussions and believe they could achieve their goals. The research also found that girls in GDST junior schools were more likely to feel prepared to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, make independent decisions and make a positive difference in the world around them.
These findings are echoed internationally by the International Coalition of Girls' Schools (ICGS), the world's leading organisation dedicated to advancing girls' education. Drawing on research from girls' schools across the globe, the ICGS highlights the positive impact of girls-only environments on confidence, leadership, academic engagement and student voice. Its research consistently shows that when girls learn in settings intentionally designed around their needs, they are more likely to participate fully, take intellectual risks and develop the self-belief that underpins future success.
For us at Strathearn Prep, this is particularly important. The primary years are a crucial period in a girl's development, when attitudes towards learning, confidence and leadership begin to take shape. Our all-girls environment allows every pupil to find her voice, discover her strengths and develop the curiosity, respect and determination that will serve her throughout her education and beyond.
Strong Academic Outcomes
Research consistently demonstrates that girls in single-sex schools often achieve stronger academic outcomes and are more likely to pursue traditionally male-dominated subjects and careers. The GDST highlights that girls educated in girls-only environments are more likely to choose advanced STEM subjects and less likely to limit their aspirations based on gender stereotypes.
At Strathearn Prep, our teachers understand how girls learn best. We create classrooms that foster discussion, curiosity, collaboration and intellectual challenge. Rather than teaching to a stereotype, we focus on the individual child, helping every girl develop confidence in her own abilities and a genuine love of learning.
The Best of Both Worlds
A common question parents ask is whether a girls-only school provides enough opportunities for girls to develop friendships and social confidence with boys.
At Strathearn Prep, we are fortunate to enjoy a close and longstanding relationship with Campbell College Junior School. Throughout the year, our pupils take part in a wide range of shared events, activities and experiences together.
This partnership offers our girls the best of both worlds. They benefit from a learning environment specifically designed around girls and their academic development, while also enjoying meaningful opportunities to build friendships, collaborate and socialise with boys. These experiences help prepare our pupils for the wider world, while ensuring that their education remains firmly focused on enabling girls to thrive.
A School Designed for Girls
At Strathearn Prep, we believe that girls deserve a learning environment where they can be themselves, free from expectations, stereotypes or limitations.
An all-girls education is not about separating girls from the wider world. It is about giving them the confidence, skills and self-belief to engage with it successfully. It is about ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to lead, to question, to innovate and to excel.
Above all, it is about helping girls discover who they are and who they might become.
